Who are we?
The Stepping Hill Microbiology department processes over 190,000 specimens a year for the hospital site from both inpatients and outpatients and for general practitioner surgeries. We provide a high quality service with a wide range of diagnostic investigations, clinical and therapeutic advice and an Infection Control service. Samples for virology investigations are referred to neighbouring specialist laboratories.
Our busy, friendly and very approachable team consists of: - 3 Consultant Microbiologists, Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory assistants, Data entry staff, our consultants` medical secretary and clerical assistant not forgetting the help and support from our laboratory porters, reception staff and office staff. We are more than happy to help with any queries or advice you want- don`t be afraid to ask be it a technical or clinical problem.
What do we do?
We assist with the clinical diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of infectious disease processes from septicaemia,
Meningitis, TB,
food poisoning,
UTI and
respiratory infections to
fungal skin and nail infections.
The clinical samples received by the department each year include faeces (both for
culture and
C.difficile toxin testing),
wound,
nose, throat, ear and eye swabs, joint fluids, CSFs and seminal fluid for infertility investigations and for post vasectomy examination. MRSA screening, respiratory samples nail clippings and skin scrapings for mycology, rheumatoid factor and urine HCG, blood cultures, uro-genital samples and ICU/HDU samples.
You name it and we`ve probably been asked to culture it!
Samples are received in the Microbiology laboratory and they are allocated a laboratory number. How each specimen is then processed depends on the type of specimen, and most importantly the clinical details provided for us on the request form.
